The Ferris Wheel PART 1
By: Sophia A.
The sky was still dark as I slid a light coat over my night shirt and put on a pair of old torn up jeans. Next, I tiptoed past my mother’s open door and quickly down the stairs. At the bottom I collected my bag and a hat to cover my face with. I slid out the door to an empty street with a cracked road running through it. As I walked on with my destination in mind I thought of the wonders I would find today. Zap, Tap, Crack, Zap, Tap, Crack. At the sound of the cracking road and lightning-y streaks of electricity I ran into an alley and crawled behind a generator. I didn’t dare look out until the sound had nearly fully faded in the distance. I knew that sound far too well, FAR to well. It was them who had taken my father, it was their fault my mother was left to fend for three children on her own. They weren’t even human, they surely did not belong here, though I suppose it is because of us that they exist. It is our own creation causing us terror, what irony. That happened far before the year 2055 though. I exited my hiding space and continued towards my goal; the park. My mother had once showed me my great great great great grandmother’s pictures of what parks used to be, green and full of plants and animals, real ones that is, and happy people, happy, what did that feel like? No one in the world had been happy for decades it was banned, happiness was. Now parks were dump grounds for old items this was where they dumped everything, the most interesting part about the park was that it borders the half of the world that was destroyed, the half swallowed by radioactivity another factor that scared me about the park was that it was abandoned by all. I knew something important lay there though, for they roam endlessly as if searching for something. For some reason though, I still continue to go to the park, I suppose it is the sense of learning about the past that intrigues me. I stopped in my tracks, here I was standing in front of the miles and miles of tins and metals and old items. It was nearly morning now and I ventured through all the old junk until I reached my normal spot to watch the sunrise, It was an old giant metal contraption with wheels and holes filled with glass I didn’t know what it was but I watched the sunset from here each morning. The sun came up slowly, It was a new day.
